Just watched it this evening. Good movie, agree with the strong start and not-so-strong ending.
Most annoying aspect - a young couple with a young girl (maybe 3 yrs. old) walked in during a particularly scary portion, kid kicking and screaming as she watched the scene, parents simply took a seat and tried to keep the terrified youngster calm throughout the movie. Unbelievable.

I haven't read it, but it sounds like the book's ending is better alright.
